Everyone Can Write A Song: The Basic Elements - Inspiration

I believe that everyone can write a song. Even if you don't play an instrument or sing in public, nothing should hold you back from writing songs. In my opinion, the bare minimum a song requires are these 4 elements.

The 4 basic elements of a song are:
  1. Inspiration
  2. Lyrics
  3. Melody
  4. Song Structure

When approached in these smaller segments, writing a song does not seem so intimidating.

Definition of Inspiration:
  1. the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.
  2. the drawing in of breath; inhalation

Sources of inspiration:
There are many sources for finding inspiration. Some writers claim to receive inspiration from a Muse or Holy Spirit while others find inspiration through reading, conversations, music, art, nature or from their own memories. The trickiest part of inspiration is recognizing when it is around you. Our minds are so often on autopilot, that we miss many details of the day. Put down your smart phone for a second and take in your surroundings. Let each of your five senses come to life and experience the reality of your world. You may notice the curling bark on a nearby tree, the smell of sewer gas or the sound of rushing traffic nearby. Something around you will trigger a memory or feeling that can be a starting place for your song.

Be prepared for inspiration:
Schedule time for writing. Many assume that you have to wait for inspiration to arrive before you can create art, but that's not true. Often the inspiration comes after you've decided to sit down and begin. Carry a notebook or voice recorder with you at all times. Also place notebooks and pens around your house so they are always within reach. Establish a central location where you can file your writings and ideas. When inspiration seems to be elusive, you can always dig into your past writings and recordings to find your way.

Inspiration is everywhere. Please leave a comment and let me know where you find your inspiration.
